NCIOG at Steve's House - The Ghost
Some of this is first hand experience...and some of this is after I left Steve's. I got to feeling really bad about 8;30 for some reason, so I went home and went to bed so that I didn't give the group Swine Flu or something.
We were at Steve-bay's house. In attendance: Gator, Packrat, Popsicle and Steve-bay, of course. And one other guest.
The ghost of Bob Wheeler.
Bob is up in Canada taking photos of the ONR...but he left his ghost behind.
I got to Steve's early and went with him to Loew's to pick up some lumber. After locking ourselves out of the house and some pizza (thanks Elaine!) we headed to the basement. The job tonight is getting the stud walls up over the concrete walls. No problem!
Steve gives instructions as to what he's looking for.
We moved the lumber in only to realize that we would have to move it again because we needed the floor for construction.
Steve showed us some small 2x4 pieces that Glue Bob had cut for him. After about an hour of playing with them we figured that we really had no idea what Bob was doing. So we set them aside.
A little while later these boards (shown above) magically appeared in the way again. Arrgh! We moved them to the table.
We cut a bottom board from pressure treated 2x4. It was so nice outside we moved the board cutting operation out there. This was BEFORE we were all attacked by large, black mosquitoes. Ouch!
Steve, who is a south paw, cross hand operates the saw, which is the damndest thing I've ever seen. Each board is perfectly cut, though.
We came back in and the boards were back in the floor and stacked in a box formation! There is a ghost in the basement! Again, we moved them out of the way.
I never thought of this, but Popsicle Rick recommended cutting both ends of the lumber pencil so you have twice as much sharp point. Great idea! So simple and yet time saving.
Ah crap. The boards are back again and a plunger is stuck to one of them. Bob has cursed the boards. We put them out in the back yard this time.
I have no idea what this is a picture of Steve.
Gator stops to tell his little girl "goodnight" before she goes to bed. And he had gas and didn't want to hang around the others. His stomach started gurgling about this time. Revenge of the pizza?
Gator went home, so the guys finished bringing the boards in and started screwing them together.
Paul is in charge of splinters.
There! All screwed!
A little light lifting and she is in place.
Steve anchors it to the top.
Paul is heavily trained by the military and police, so they gave him the hand cannon that fastens the bottom board to the concrete with a .22 powered nail. BANG!
BANG! BANG! BANG!
There! The wall is done! Excellent...
Next week we are over at Bob's for some revenge and some scenery.

Ready to Cast!
I've spent the day reconfiguring the shop for the casting business. We started making masters, molds and castings for model train companies again. I missed it and we need the tax deductions.
Our first customer delivered molds and materials the other day and I have several new masters to cast as well.
So the shop is clean and organized, and I'm off to the store to buy some supplies

Last Night's Activities
Well, I did GO to train night...just didn't last. I'm not sure if I was just tired or something I ate during the day didn't agree with me, but I went home early and went to bed. Today, I'm back to normal.

Hello everyone,
We had a great work session last evening. Many thanks to Scott for coming over early to help carry the material back home. Sorry Paul, but a holiday weekend friday night on I-85N can be a bear. Everyone is headed out of town! Good alternates are Satellite Blvd. or Buford Hwy from the Hwy 120 or Sugarloaf areas.
Anyway, after moving the lumber when we should have just left most of it laying outside in the yard; we recaptured what and how we needed to build the framing for the rear wall of the main layout room. Then I threw in the special "Wheeler Design" 2x4 pieces that attach the top of the framing to the existing house joists - that really got us going! I think Rick got a couple great photos of what we at first thought we'd do with them!
Actually building the framing went pretty well. We did the cutting in the backyard. That was great during full daylight - but man the mosquitos sure were bad as it got toward evening!
(ed. I have about 10 skeeter bites on me this morning!)
Stepping back and admiring you guys' handy work, I realize once again just how GREAT the NCIOG is! Thanks Scott, Paul, and Rick for all the help.
Bob, have a safe return trip but know that we were talking bad about you haunting us this evening! It was like those 2x4 pieces had a mind of their own! We must have moved them out of the way a dozen times. Every time we turned around they we in the way - "Bob must have moved them again!!!!" :) LOL

Making, Casting and Weathering Details DVD

I recently purchased Darryl's latest DVD on model building and about to go downstairs and watch it again. I love it!
Darryl takes us through the steps to make some simple detail items such as a picnic table, lobster traps, birds nests and store room shelves. But its not the details that are important. Its how he constructs them and the techniques surrounding the assembly. He makes it look so easy.
I like his natural approach to keep it simple. Anyone can watch this video and go to the shop and reproduce what he's done. There is way more than $20 worth of information and you don't have to scan over ads like a magazine.
It is of great value and I highly recommend it. The filming still leaves a lot to be desired, but it is tough to get close ups of some of this. His wife's hands make a guest appearance and they are much easier on the eyes than Darryl's. But all in all it is a fantastic skill builder!
Since I don't sell advertising I can say whatever I want...so this one gets 4 out of 5 stars!
